Cooking Trick No. 2:
How To Caramelize Onions?
Caramelizing onions (or shallots) is a great way to add richness and a depth of flavor to your meals, and it’s so easy.
Here’s How It Works: Slice a large red onion into thin loops. Make sure the slices are the same thickness so they cook at the same rate.
Heat a small amount of oil in a pan. Sautée the onion over medium-high heat until onion slices are soft. When they are starting to turn translucent (after about seven or eight minutes), add a heaping spoonful of brown sugar. Stir to incorporate the sugar, then let the onions sit for a minute or two, allowing them to brown and caramelize. Stir occasionally to prevent burning, but allow them to develop a little bit of a crust.
Here’s My Favorite Part: To finish up, deglaze with a small amount of soy sauce. This adds an extra flavor punch; the saltiness of the soy sauce brings out the sweetness.
